Reducing the Thirty Meter Telescope to a binary is inaccurate

While there is much disagreement about the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), there is one thing both sides agree on – it should not be reduced  to a “science versus culture” binary.

“It’s a trope to sell to the public,” said Kamanamaikalani Beamer, an associate professor at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Center for Hawaiian Studies, suggesting that it undermines the complexity of the TMT.

Paul Coleman, a native Hawaiian and astronomer at the Institute for Astronomy at UH Mānoa, agreed.
